The Director of Care at The Royal Star & Garter Homes has received an OBE in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List. The award was made to Pauline Shaw in recognition of her services to Veterans.

As a nurse, Pauline has worked in clinical practice and health & social care since 1982. She has held the position of Director of Care & Service Development at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, a charity which cares for military veterans living with disability or dementia, since 2002. This award acknowledges her passionate and unwavering commitment to improving care for older people, and her courage and determination in leading an innovative approach to care.

Pauline is tireless in seeking excellence, sharing best practice and promoting developments in care. As demand for the Charity’s dementia care service increased, she had the vision to see how it could be significantly improved and sustained bringing about positive change to people’s lives. She pioneered the Charity’s award-winning dementia care model, by working with consultancy Dementia Care Matters to deliver innovative care to an exceptional standard.

Under Pauline’s leadership, both Homes have won awards for dementia care and the Solihull Home has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. She is proactive in sharing her knowledge and learning, working on a NICE committee to develop dementia care guidelines and as a trustee with The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust.

Pauline was delighted to receive the award: “I am deeply honoured to receive an OBE. I’m still in shock but over the moon! There are so many people who have supported me over the years and to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude, not least the wonderful residents, my friends and colleagues at The Royal Star & Garter Homes and my family. I hope that having these important letters after my name will help to reinforce my messages about improving care for older people.”

Andy Cole, Chief Executive at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, commented, “Pauline is an inspiration to our staff, volunteers and residents for her passion, professionalism and sheer determination to make our Homes the best. Pauline works tirelessly to ensure our residents always receive excellent care and that the Charity continues to develop new ideas. I’m so delighted that Pauline’s many years of dedication has been acknowledged by this hugely prestigious award – it is very well deserved.”
