Residents, family, staff and volunteers at The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull joined together to celebrate resident Joan Taylor’s 100th birthday. The Home, which cares for disabled veterans and their spouses, made sure it was a birthday to remember with surprise performances, giant balloons, a spectacular cake and a party in her honour.

Joan made sure she celebrated her milestone birthday in style, starting her day with a trip to the in-house hairdresser and receiving visits from other residents wanting to wish her many happy returns.

Later on there was a surprise performance by Mickie Driver from the Not Forgotten Association. Mickie had promised Joan he would visit on her birthday and he held true to his word. As Joan made her way to the communal lounge, she was met by Mickie and rapturous applause from fellow residents. His performance didn’t disappoint and everyone had a great time watching Mickie sing and dance to well-known tunes.

After the performance, Joan enjoyed lunch with her family before receiving a visit from Stuart Davis, the Mayor of Solihull, who presented Joan with a beautiful basket of flowers. To top the day off, Joan then enjoyed an afternoon party with her friends and loved-ones in attendance where she was given more flowers and presents.

Joan commented on her day, “I’m absolutely overwhelmed by all the love and attention that has been shown to me today. I haven’t even had time to open my cards yet!”
