Our Wellbeing Teams are an integral part of life in the Homes and we love to share how they support residents and create magical moments. The teams are always busy putting together fun activities, events and outings, seven days a week, and no two days are ever the same!

Kevin with resident Lillian at Royal Star & Garter Solihull

What are the best things about your role?

I really enjoy listening to and learning from our residents, hearing stories of their long and colourful lives. As a Royal Navy veteran myself, I feel privileged to be associated with a leading care charity supporting the military community. It allows me to connect with the veterans and share our ‘sea stories’ while working with incredible people who have a positive impact on residents’ wellbeing.

How has being a veteran yourself helped you in your role?

Being a veteran has been incredibly helpful for my role. I can relate to the veterans in our Home, understanding their experiences during their service as well as the military jargon.

As a veteran what are your thoughts on the Home and the care provided?

Our Solihull Home is rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC in all five areas which is huge as there are only a handful of care homes in the UK to achieve this. Our Home attained Veteran Friendly Framework status last year, and has just been reaccredited. This makes us one of the first in the country to achieve this which is something we’re all immensely proud of. These are just some of our Home’s amazing achievements.

Do you have any special memories working with us?

There are so many special memories for me, such as our regular day trips to the Armed Forces National Arboretum. One specific memory that really sticks with me, is the planning and expediting of a special trip for one resident on her 100th birthday. It took a lot of planning and coordinating with her family members, but we managed to plan a journey down memory lane, visiting old schools, houses and even workplaces. It was such an honour and privilege to be part of the whole process and make her birthday really special.

What do you enjoy most about working in your team?

That’s an easy one. The camaraderie and the shared goal we have of the wellbeing of all our residents here in our Solihull Home. I also enjoy being in a role that allows me to give my time, energy, empathy, or even just an ear, for residents to talk with me.
