Caring for Veterans with Dementia
Royal Star & Garter delivers specialist dementia care for veterans and their partners who are living with disability or dementia across our Homes.
Around 40% of the people we support are living with dementia, and each person receives care tailored to their individual needs following diagnosis. Our work recognises that a timely diagnosis can support an individual in a truly person-centred way, improving their quality of life and wellbeing.
“I’m impressed with the quality of care and the whole environment. Particularly, I would highlight the social activities, medical care and quality of food. The staff are uniformly pleasant and upbeat, and take a personal interest in the residents. We really enjoy going for walks in the well-tended gardens, and we have used the little room in the garden for private parties. My mother-in-law rates the food highly, especially the home-made soups. The staff are courteous, well trained and encouraging. We feel lucky to have found this residential home with its superior ethos.”

Alongside medical advice and support from GPs or specialists, we focus on everyday care approaches that help people adjust and continue living as well as possible.
With the right environment and support, it is possible to maintain comfort, dignity, and enjoyment in daily life.
Providing extra time and patience at mealtimes can make a real difference. Smaller portions, snack-style meals, and foods that are easier to handle may be more suitable. Social interaction can play an important role in maintaining confidence and supporting wellbeing. Even when memory changes, connection with others remains valuable. Gentle movement and physical activity are encouraged where possible, helping to support both physical health and emotional wellbeing.
We are deeply proud to be able to provide these specialist services for veterans and their families, supporting them at every stage of their dementia journey with care, dignity, and understanding.
Gifts in Wills play a vital role in sustaining and developing the care we provide, helping ensure that veterans, both now and in the future, can continue to receive the compassionate support they deserve.
