Outstanding dementia care provided at Royal Star & Garter in Solihull has been recognised with a prestigious national award.

Staff working in the dementia care families at the Home have been honoured with a Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care Team Award.

Royal Star & Garter provides loving, compassionate care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia. The charity also has Homes in Surbiton and High Wycombe.

The award recognises the exceptional efforts of the adult social care workforce, and Home Manager Jamie Stubbs received a trophy before an online presentation by Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care, Deborah Sturdy, on Tuesday 19 September.

The announcement was made during Professional Care Workers Week, which runs from 18-22 September and coincided with World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September.

Prof Sturdy said during her presentation to Home Manager Jamie: “It’s a great pleasure to be giving the Royal Star & Garter dementia care team in Solihull this award, for all that they do for their residents. One of the great things about my role is celebrating social care colleagues who go above and beyond to deliver exceptional care. It is no mean feat to achieve this award in the complex area of dementia care and support.”

Home Manager Jamie Stubbs said: “It’s a fantastic honour to receive this from Deborah Sturdy. It’s recognition of the brilliant work we do to care for people living with dementia in this Home. I’m extremely proud of my team and it’s a privilege to lead them.”

Julie’s father is living with dementia and is cared for at the Solihull Home. She said: “Nothing compares to Royal Star & Garter. I know Dad’s safe and well looked after. I can’t imagine what it would have been like had he not been at Royal Star & Garter. I think the Home is brilliant.”

Pauline Shaw is the Director of Care at the charity. She said: “This is a prestigious national award that is thoroughly deserved by the team. We strive to provide the very best care we can, and we’re always looking to improve and innovate. It’s really nice to receive recognition for the work we do.”

The Home in Solihull is already regarded as one of the best in the country. In its last Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, it scored ‘Outstanding’ in all five tested domains. At the time, only 10 other nursing homes had achieved this.

In a visit last year to Royal Star & Garter in High Wycombe, Prof Sturdy praised staff at the Home for their “commitment and passion for social care”.

Professional Care Workers Week is a celebration of care workers and the essential work they do.
