A young supporter of The Royal Star & Garter Homes, nine-year-old Joseph Tassell, walked from Surbiton to Richmond to raise money for the Charity last December. 

Joseph lives near to the Surbiton Home which cares for elderly, disabled veterans. Having seen the Home being built, he decided he wanted to help in some way, especially as the First World War was featured so heavily last year at his school and on television.

Joseph said: “I really wanted to do something to help the people who have helped our country in the past and just decided it would be nice to do a sponsored event with my mum and dad. I did get a bit tired during the walk but I knew I would finish. I am already thinking about another event I can do this year for the Home.”

Joseph visited the Surbiton Home on 5 February with his parents to present a cheque for £120. The residents and staff were delighted to meet the young fundraiser who took a tour of the Home and chatted happily with everyone.

The Charity’s Director of Fundraising & Marketing, Gordon Craig, commented: “We are so grateful to Joseph for raising funds in support of our residents. It is encouraging to see young people being inspired by the sacrifices of the older generation.”
