The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull won two awards at the 6^th National Dementia Care Awards in Birmingham on Friday 13 November.

The Charity, which provides specialist care to disabled veterans, submitted two entries: Best Dementia Team Award for the Solihull Home’s Dementia Care Team and Best Resident/Relative Contribution Award, nominating Rachel Christophers whose husband, Theo, an Army veteran, lives with dementia at the Solihull Home.

Sheena Wyllie, at Dementia Care Matters, a leading dementia care consultancy, nominated the Team. She commented: “The Team at The Royal Star & Garter Homes have created a ‘home’ in which there is such a strong sense of well-being and mutual regard, it is almost palpable. The team and people who live in with dementia are confident in themselves and their value to others.”

Sue Tompkins, Solihull Home Manager, nominated Rachel for the Best Relative Contribution Award because: “Rachel offers help and advice with a smile, even though her own journey, at times, is hard. She has such a positive impact on Theo, the other residents living with dementia, the Care Team and all of the relatives she meets. She is an inspiration to us all and we are incredibly grateful for everything she does.”

Pauline Shaw, the Charity’s Director of Care & Service Development, was delighted that both the Dementia Care Team and Rachel have been honoured in this way: “We are incredibly proud of our Dementia Care Team, they have worked extremely hard to reach the highest standard of care and their efforts have all been for the love of the people they care for. Rachel has embraced our approach and has become an inspiration to us all. We are delighted to have won in both categories – but these Awards are a tribute to everyone who works so hard to improve the lives of people living with dementia.”
