Friends and family joined a Second World War veteran at The Royal Star & Garter Home in Surbiton to help celebrate her 101st birthday.

A party was held for Nora Birtwistle on Friday 7 June, with residents, family and guests enjoying a delicious birthday cake, Champagne, and live music.

Nora lived in Surbiton before moving nearby to the Home in Upper Brighton Road, which provides care for ex-Servicemen and women and their partners living with disability or dementia.

Nora served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) between 1941 and 1945, working as a radar operative and attaining the rank of Leading Aircraft Woman.

The party was attended by her nephew James Birtwistle, his wife, their two children and baby grandson. James said: “The party was wonderfully organised by The Royal Star & Garter Homes and my aunt had a lovely time.”
