Major Charles Jenkins of the Army Intelligence Corps is a keen supporter of The Royal Star & Garter Homes. Not one to shy away from a challenge, his latest self-imposed mission is to row 3,650km over the next year (or 10km per day), to raise funds for the Charity.

Major Jenkins began his latest challenge on his birthday, November 4, by bringing in his Concept 2 rowing machine to the Surbiton Home for the residents to watch his first session. As he explained:

“I am going to row 3,650km on a rowing machine in a year for The Royal Star & Garter Homes because I want to challenge myself at 55 years old and help veterans. The residents, the dedicated staff and the selfless volunteers who all make up The Royal Star & Garter Homes provide me with a regular education into why we need to care for each other, why we need to provide dignity in old age and how, even as a visitor, we can benefit from engaging with such a special environment.”

Charles has supported the Charity for the last 25 years. He completed the 100k Thames Path Challenge 2014 to raise funds and has been a frequent visitor to the Richmond and then the Surbiton Home to offer his support to fellow Intelligence Corps veterans, including Surbiton’s Mr Iain Winning.

The Royal Star & Garter Homes is extremely grateful to its many supporters who, by raising funds or volunteering, help to provide specialised nursing and therapeutic care for disabled ex-veterans.
