How Creativity helps Residents living with Dementia
The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull was delighted to hold an art exhibition featuring the work of talented artist and resident, Alec Shaw. Alec lives with dementia at the Home, which cares for disabled veterans.
Macelieta Lawan, a Lead Health Care Assistant at the Home, knows Alec’s work and thought it would be a lovely idea to showcase his art in a proper exhibition. Staff invited friends, family and guest-of-honour, his wife, Iris, to the official opening of the exhibition. Following the cutting of the ribbon, guests enjoyed sparkling wine and canapés as they viewed the artwork and chatted to the artist.
Alec’s wife, Iris, commented: “Alec was in his element, shaking people’s hands, thanking them for coming, talking about his artwork. It really was wonderful to see. Alec thoroughly enjoyed the day.”
Helping the residents to live life to the full is central to the care at The Royal Star & Garter Homes. The Solihull Home displays many of Alec’s framed work and sketches, as well as those of its other skilled artists.
