Martin Sutcliffe
16 October 1932 - 21 June 2017
Martin served in the Border Regiment, in Egypt during the Suez Crisis in 1951-53, dealing with the threat from General Nasser who wanted to disrupt and nationalise the Suez Canal. He remained in the Army until 1967, serving with 2.1 SAS Regiment from 1955-1967.
Martin was almost completely paralysed from the chest down. He came to live with The Royal Star & Garter Homes in 2008, where our care helped him to be as independent as possible and live life to the full. During his time in the Homes, Martin generously allowed the Charity to share his story, helping to raise funds to care for his fellow veterans.
Martin was one of our longest serving residents, in both the Richmond and then Surbiton Homes. He took an active part in life in the Homes, where he was much-loved and will be greatly missed. The thoughts and deepest sympathies of everyone at The Royal Star & Garter Homes are with Martin’s family.
